Blood in Urine

Blood in Urine. What's your worry?

In men, the urethra carries both urine and semen out of the
body and what may be mistaken for urinary bleeding is
sometimes a bloody ejaculation, usually due to a prostate
problem. The presence of blood in your urine can turn toilet
water pale pink or bright red. Or, you may just see spots of
blood in the water after urinating.

Should you be tested?

If you are observing any changes in
urine color for longer than two days and
it cannot be linked to the consumption of
a specific food or drug or vitamins. This
is also important if it happens on a
repeated episodes base.
What are the causes and risks of blood in urine?

There are many possible causes of blood in the urine, excerpt:

-benign prostatic hyperplasia, or an enlarged prostate, a
common condition in men over age 40

-bladder infections such as acute cystitis or recurrent cystitis

-bleeding or blood-clotting disorders, such as hemophilia A or
hemophilia B. Clotting poblems may also be seen in a person
who is taking too much of the blood-thinning drug warfarin.

-infection in the urethra, known as urethritis. The urethra is
the tube that carries urine from the bladder to the outside of
the body.

-kidney damage, such as from the condition called
glomerulonephritis. In children, this damage is commonly due
to an infection with Group A streptococcus, commonly known
as a strep infection.

-kidney infection, known as pyelonephritis

-a kidney stone, which is usually quite painful

-sickle cell disease, an inherited condition usually seen in
African American people. It results in abnormally shaped red
blood cells, which can damage the kidney.

-a tumor or cancer, most commonly in the kidney, bladder, or
prostate
Prior to rushing for urine test

Make sure that red color of your urine is
not coming from recent consumption of
beets, blackberries or other red food.
Pink, red, or smoky brown urine can be a
side effect of a medication.

Blood in the urine

Is usually caused by kidney and urinary
tract diseases except, however in women,
the blood can actually come from the
vagina. In men, urinary bleeding is
sometimes connected with a bloody
ejaculation
